Essential Oils for Allergies

Birds are chirping, snow is melting, and the sun is shining longer - spring is here! 🌻☀️

Unfortunately, if you're like me, and 60 million other North Americans, the changing of the season also means the bringing of runny noses, watery eyes and non-stop sneezing. The great news is that there are a variety of essential oils that can help you out so you can enjoy the warm weather with family and friends without the symptoms of allergies.


Why do we get spring allergies?

An allergic reaction is the immune system responding to allergens. Allergens are substances that mislead the immune system into thinking that the harmless substance is an invader. People who suffer from allergies have immune systems that overreact to allergens, resulting in the body producing antibodies that release histamines, which cause an allergic reaction. Most spring allergies are reactions to pollen, however, dust, mold, insect stings, and animal dander are also common allergens that cause allergic reactions.

When our body encounters these allergens, the allergic reaction can cause irritation to the nose, throat, lungs, ears, sinuses, or the skin. The root of these symptoms is the immune system and inflammation. Fortunately, essential oils have been shown in studies to fight inflammation and boost the immune system. Research reveals that essential oils can combat allergies as they can have the ability to help fight infection, bacteria, harmful toxins, and detoxify the body. With the support of essential oils, your body can reduce the overreaction of your immune system and relieve repertory conditions, when encountering harmless particles.


Tea Tree

Tea Tree oil can act as an antiseptic agent. The oil can destroy airborne pathogens, mold, bacteria, and fungi that can cause allergies. Inhaling tea tree and diffusing the oil can help eliminate allergens. Additionally, tea tree has been shown to have antimicrobial effects  on bacteria. Bacteria can lead to inflammation and irritate our immune system. Therefore, tea tree oil can help combat allergies by eliminating bacteria and prevent our immune system from over reacting to allergens.



Lemon can help lymphatic system drainage, supporting the respiratory system to function properly. A study also revealed that inhaling lemon oil can prevent the growth of bacteria and boosts the immune system. Therefore, inhaling and diffusing lemon essential oil can help kill the bacterial partials that cause allergic triggers in the air.



Basil can help keep inflammatory responses in check. Basil can help support the adrenal glands, which are responsible for regulation of over 50 hormones that control almost every function in the body. Basil oil also been proven to kill bacteria, yeast and mold that leads to asthma and respiratory issues. Therefore, basil oil can help your body react properly to allergens, and can prevent allergic reactions.



Inhaling peppermint oil can help provide immediate relief from allergic symptoms by soothing respiratory inflammation. Many studies support the anti-inflammatory effects of peppermint oil. In fact, one study published by the European Journal of Medical Research suggests that peppermint oil can help to reduce allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. Helping you to breathe with ease.



Eucalyptus can improves oxygen circulation by opening up the lungs and sinuses. Studies suggest that the cooling sensation from inhaling eucalyptus oil helps improve flow of oxygen. Eucalyptus also contains citronellal, which can act as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory, counteracting the toxins acting as allergens. Studies reveal that inhaling eucalyptus oil has helped ease respiratory tract infections and reduce sore throat, hoarseness and coughs.
